Tết Nhâm Dần đã đến! Tổ chức VietRISE xin kính chúc quý vị một năm đầy vạn sự may mắn, an lành, và hạnh phúc. 

Mừng năm mới, chúng tôi cũng muốn mừng những sự chiến thắng của cộng đồng trong năm 2021. Cho dù đại dịch chưa khỏi, năm 2021 cũng đem những niềm hy vọng. Niềm hy vọng rằng cộng đồng ta càng ngày càng đoàn kết để ước mơ công bằng xã hội trở thành sự thật.

Điều hy vọng đó được diễn ra khi tổ chức VietRISE và các cư dân mobile home người Việt giúp thông qua luật Rent Control (kiểm soát tiền thuê) tại thành phố Santa Ana Năm 2021 Tháng 10. Luật này là luật duy nhất ở Orange County sẽ không cho phép tiền thuê tăng hơn 3% mỗi năm cho nhiều người thuê. Trong hành trình thông qua luật Rent Control, VietRISE đã vận động và họp với các cư dân để thành lập kế hoạch hành động, tổ chức các buổi họp với các nghị viên Santa Ana để trình bày sự quan trọng của luật ấy, và dịch các bài viết của cư dân cao niên từ tiếng Việt qua tiếng Anh để tiếng nói của họ được lắng nghe ở các buổi họp hội đồng thành phố. Được điều hành bởi thế hệ giới trẻ, sứ mệnh của VietRISE là nâng lên tiếng nói của người Việt có thu nhập thấp và các cộng đồng nhập cư và thúc đẩy công bằng xã hội.  

Trong những ngày đêm đối phó chúng tôi thấy trước mắt sự kiên nhẫn của các cư dân mobile home. Họ đa số là người cao niên với thu nhập cố định hoặc đang sống dựa vào tiền SSA và SSI. Cho dù phải đối mặt với thế lực tiền tài muốn chống lại sự công bằng xã hội, sự cố gắng của họ và sự đoàn kết giữa người Việt thế hệ cao niên và giới trẻ dẫn đến một chiến thắng sau bấy nhiêu năm chờ đợi. 

Đồng bào ơi! Sự hy vọng đã có mặt trong kỷ nguyên mới! Sự kết nối ấy đã đem sự hy vọng rằng nếu cộng đồng ta đoàn kết chúng ta có thể đạt được những gì tốt nhất cho cộng đồng. Chiến thắng này đã lan tỏa khắp Little Saigon và các cư dân đã hỏi rằng, “Thành phố tôi cần Rent Control. Nếu Santa Ana làm được thì tại sao không ở thành phố tôi?” Cho những đồng bào sống trong sự lo sợ không biết khi nào bị buộc rời khỏi Little Saigon bởi vì tiền thuê nhà lên quá cao, sự hy vọng sẽ thành sự thực.  

Đức Ông Joseph Nguyễn Đức Minh, người cư dân mobile home phát biểu ở hội đồng thành phố rằng, “Mọi người có quyền đảm bảo một nơi sống tốt. Đòi tăng tiền thuê sẽ mang điều lo ngại và lo lắng cho dân… và có thể vi phạm nhân quyền.” Để bảo vệ nhân quyền chúng ta phải đảm bảo mọi người có nhà ở và không cần lo sợ về tiên nhà lên quá cao. Thế thì bước đầu tiên để đảm bảo nhân quyền là phải thông qua luật Rent Control ở Westminster và Garden Grove. Năm 2021 là năm hy vọng. Năm 2022 sẽ là năm hành động. Đồng bào ơi cho năm mới lấy niềm hy vọng này để tạo ra một năm hành động, để lập một tương lai đầy đủ và êm ấm. Hãy tham gia với VietRISE trong năm mới để dẫn đến một năm đầy hành động.

The Year of the Tiger has arrived! VietRISE wishes you a year full of luck, peace, and happiness.

Celebrating the new year, we also want to celebrate the victories we achieved in 2021. Although the pandemic has not ended, 2021 brought with it a ray of hope. This hope is rooted in our community coming together day by day to make dreams of social justice a reality. 

This hope grew when VietRISE and Vietnamese mobile home residents helped a movement of community members pass Rent Control in the city of Santa Ana in October 2021. This law, which is the only one of its kind in Orange County, will not allow rent increases of more than 3% for many tenants. On the path to passing Rent Control, VietRISE organized and met with mobile home residents to create an action plan, hosted meetings with Santa Ana city council members to convey the importance of that law, and translated the seniors’ speeches from Vietnamese to English in order to have their voices heard during city council meetings. Led by the Vietnamese younger generation, the mission of VietRISE is to raise the voices of low-income Vietnamese and immigrant communities and advance social justice. 

Throughout the days and nights fighting, we saw firsthand the patience of the mobile home residents. Generally, they are seniors with a  fixed-income or are relying on SSA or SSI. Although they face forces of money that oppose social justice, their persistence and the union of senior and younger Vietnamese led to a victory that they have been waiting for for many years.

Vietnamese community! Hope is right in front of us in this new era! The connection has brought hope that if our community unites we will be able to achieve what is best for our community. This victory has spread across Little Saigon and residents have asked, “My city needs Rent Control. If Santa Ana can do it, why can’t mine?” For the Vietnamese people who are living in a state of fear, not knowing when they will be forced to leave Little Saigon because rent has increased too high, hope will become reality. 

Monsignor Joseph Nguyen Duc Minh, a mobile home resident, announced during a city council meeting, “Everyone has the right to secure a decent place of living. To insist on rent increase is to impose worry and anxiety to residents… and may be a violation of human rights.” In order to protect human rights, we must guarantee everyone has a place to live and without fear that housing costs will increase too much. Therefore, the next step is to pass Rent Control in Westminster and Garden Grove. 2021 was a year of hope. 2022 will be a year of action. Vietnamese community, for the new year, let’s take this feeling of hope and turn it into a year of action, where we work to build a future filled with peace, in which we have guaranteed access to life-affirming necessities. Join VietRISE in the new year to bring about a year full of action.
